It’s
Christmas Eve, and for many of us we wait the big old man and his sleigh. As
kids we love Santa who gives us toys every year. As adults we love watching this fictional
character in movies. We love the story of Santa. Overall Christmas is described
as a ‘magical’ season, the best time of the year.

Yet knowing
that Santa is not real, we still get excited. Why?

Because
Santa is real.

Let me
explain.

We as humans
love a good story. There is nothing that sounds better than cuddling by the
fire with a hot drink and listening to an epic story. A story that transports
you, not just to a distant land, but transports you out of this world.

There is
nothing better than when you walk out of the movie theater feeling like you can
conquer the world as you have just watched a superhero movie ready to pull out
your sword and defeat the bad guys.

We love a
good story.

Why?

Because
beauty speaks to our soul. And these stories are just that. Beauty.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Good stories
awaken in us the desire to want to be part of something bigger, the longing to
belong to something that is outside of ourselves.

Good stories
almost speak life into us. They tell us of hope, of victory over the darkness.
They tell us that the good people always win and that I just need to believe in
something beyond myself. Good stories show me virtues that I deeply desire,
sacrifice, walking with friends in dark places. These are stories of heroes and
friends.

And these
stories are true and they are real.

They are
real because they point to something beyond. They are full of enchantment
because we live in an enchanted world whether we recoginse it or not. Our world
is full of mystery because there is a world beyond the material in which we see
with our eyes. This world was made by the Divine and by default it can only be
enchanted, mysterious and mythological.

Yes, I used
the word mythological.

I believe
myths to be true and not false.

Myths point
to something that is real. They point to a world outside of us, they point to
Christ. Human myths all originate from the One True Story because from the dawn
of creation, humans have been made in the image of the Triune God. Therefore
naturally the stories we imagine and create from the depths of our hearts come
from this Divine imprint.

In one of C.
S. Lewis’ essays he explains the need to dress the Gospel in fairy tales in
order for us to see and know Truth. Fairy tales are able to pass the watchful
dragons that prevent us from seeing Reality. In a way myths are incarnational
as they conceal the Truth in order to reveal the Truth to mankind in our own
language and culture. God was incarnate, the Divine put on Man in order to
reveal the Father. He came in the form of man in order to be relatable to
mankind.

No wonder
myths speak of pure greatness, of great hope and ultimate victory. They tell us
we are not alone in this world and that real friends exist and are willing to
know us and love us. Myths lift us up from our dark despair and they shine a
light and scream at us of the great hope and joy that belongs to us. They draw
us into a world that has meaning and depth, they draw us into a real Mystery.

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” G K Chesterton

Yes, I can
defeat those nasty dragons in my life, I can finally defeat Thanos, I do have
the power to destroy the Ring.

And all this
is true. Real truth.

Because;
“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
Romans 8:37

The Victory
is ours through the Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension of our
Lord.

Hope is ours
and it isn’t wishful thinking because Aslan is coming back and all will be made
well.

The Church
provides a real and true ‘mythical’ experience for us in the Liturgy. In the
Liturgy Reality is Revealed to us through the enactment of symbols; symbols
meaning the real presence of and not just a mere sign. The Real Heaven is here
present in the Liturgy. It is presented to us in a mythic way that it may be
more understood and accessible to us. The Liturgy portrays to us glimpses of the
Reality of the Kingdom the same way myths do but how much more the Liturgy
which was given to us by Christ Himself.

All that is good and
beautiful in the world symbolises, shows the real presence of, our Lord and
Saviour. When stories are told of a loyal and faithful friend, revealing the
ultimate Friend. The hero who sacrifices and lays down his life for his city, revealing
the Lamb Who was slain. The marriage
that withstood all its trials, revealing Love. Or just the ordinary guy struggling
through life, revealing our Conqueror.

We may not experience what is true, noble, just, pure and lovely but they still remain real in this world. These stories show us what we could experience, what we could become, what we could be and ultimately what we are.

Let’s read and tell good stories and watch good movies as we all long for the Kingdom.

I wanted to share this simple but powerful pamphlet I stumbled upon on my visit to St Vladimir’s Seminar by the late Fr Thomas Hopko. It is a refreshing take on answering the question “what’s my calling in life?” Although many of these are highlighted in the pamphlet itself, I wanted to share some of my favorite:

“God knows every person from before the foundation of the world and provides their unique life and the specific conditions of their earthly way that are literally the best possible conditions for them.”

This is a convicting statement as Fr. Hopko explains that it is pride that leads us to say things like, if only I would have been born in this time period, or into a wealthy family, or this or that way… We think we know better than God what is best for us! It is a awe-inspiring and humbling thought to know that God has placed us exactly where and when we need to be, and given us everything we need.

Another quote that touched me was:

“…’form of life’ is not necessarily a job or profession. For example, some people may be called to suffer on this earth and to bear the results of fallen humanity in the most violent manner—to be victimized by disease, affliction, or both physical and mental disability; to be the objects of other people’s cares or disdain.”

Our vocation isn’t necessarily tied to what we do in this world, but rather who we are becoming. Being a doctor, lawyer, or engineer should not be an identity but rather a means to an end. Furthermore, we are instructed to bear illnesses that come to us patiently knowing that it is God who has allowed them and is using this vocation of suffering as a means for salvation.

This pamphlet also touches on the ‘ways of salvation’ that the Lord has given us:

“Some will sanctify their lives being married; others will be single. Some will do it in clerical orders; others as lay people. Some will be monastic; most will live in the everyday secular world.”

But it also affirms the vocation we share in common:

“In a certain sense, every person has the same vocation, which is to be a saint… We can cooperate with God. We can share His holiness. We can become, as the saints themselves teach us, all that God Himself is by His gracious action in our lives”

These last two quotes really sum up the entire matter for me:

“In the eyes of God none is better than the other. None is higher or more praiseworthy. Each must find his or her own way and glorify God through it. Ultimately this is all that matters”

“Being faithful were we are is the basic sign that we will God’s will for our lives”

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! (download by clicking this link or read below)

“I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantine and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn’t quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.”― Sylvia Plath

Last September I had a pretty big decision to make about where I was going to accept a job. I called up the people who knew me best to get their insight, asked my father of confession for his wisdom and spoke to people working in the same field for their perspective.

Whether it’s deciding over relationships, colleges, schools or jobs, sometimes we might find ourselves with two seemingly great choices, and so we find ourselves in a dilemma. Each choice will come at a cost; each choice will have positives and negatives, and ultimately no choice will be perfect.

I’ve never been a fan of pros and cons lists – I find that life can’t be categorised that easily. However, a friend gave me advice that helped. I was told to assign a value to each point under my two options. When I started writing the values I held, I started to see that while both choices were in line with the vision I had for my life, there were some values that were more significant than others. And while one option had way more values than the other, the other which only had a couple were much more fundamental to me.

A few of the things I’ve learned this season…

“We don’t know what to do but our eyes are on you” (2 Chronicles 20:12). In the midst of his crisis, King Jehoshaphat acted by praising God. We also in the midst of our confusion and turmoil over decisions, need to learn the art laying our anxieties and restless thoughts down, being still and opening our heart in worship. The voice of the Holy Spirit can be so gentle that it’s only when we spend time in his presence that we can discern His Voice from all the noise.

Pray and learn from whatever happens on the other side. No matter what you choose, there will be struggle, and there will be trials for we know “through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). Sometimes those are a result of our choices, but in the end, they will be used by God to sanctify us and purify us. Living with our eyes on eternity is important in those seasons to understand that nothing is outside of His never-ending and unfailing love and mercy. There is no such thing as Plan B or Z with Christ. He will use all for our deification; it might take us longer on certain paths but even then, all we need to do is repent, and we are restored.

There’s a principle in radiology that says even if you find the fracture on an x-ray you should keep looking for other signs because you don’t want to be blindsided. Bring your decision before the Lord in prayer and meditation but challenge yourself to be curious and look deeper into your intentions, motivations and reasons for each choice. Give yourself time, patience and space and trust that the Holy Spirit will examine you, try you and reveal what is in depths of your heart.

Sometimes God’s will is clear and other times, most times, God allows us the freedom to choose and become whoever we want, though He may certainly have a direction for you. Submission is hard as we deny our self that we may be dedicated to Another. The hardest part in all of this is asking God “Who do you want me to be?” I think of Mary, called to be Mother of God; Abraham called to be Father of Nations and the disciples called to be Fishers of Men. God revealed to them who they were in His eyes and with that promise He gave them the strength and grace to become. Sometimes we don’t know how to choose because we don’t know who God is asking us to be. That may not be a question that gets answered overnight, it needs silence and self-awareness and time alone with Him. Sometimes it’s a process – it takes making one choice faithfully, and waiting faithfully and then making another and waiting to see what is revealed. But it’s a question we all desperately need the answer to – more than what we do God wants us to know who we are. It is only in knowing that, can we then make the decisions about what we do, how we spend our time, money and emotions. Because where we invest our heart, there we invest our life.

What if there is no such thing as the perfect choice? Because choosing means we can’t have everything. Because we don’t know how things will change and how those things that change will change us. Because we don’t know who we will be or what we will need in the future? Because we can sit here and play “what if the the grass is greener over there?” all day and it won’t bring us any closer to an answer – only further from being satisfied. And what if none of that matters because the point is to grow and seek His kingdom regardless of our choices?

So trust yourself. Most of our choices are not made in isolation. Where we are now and the choices we are making today is a culmination of all the choices and experiences in the past that have led up to this point. Trust that the God who has knit you from birth, has been guiding you and shaping you like clay can lead you today in this choice. Sometimes it’s fear of not having the perfect picture of our future figured out that holds us back.

A year later I’m fighting to find peace in the unknown road I’m on, but I want to continue to fight and continue to hope in Him because when I put the pieces in front of me, they don’t fit. Before me lays the back of a colourful tapestry and I have little idea what the canvas is going to look like. There are some dark threads from the past and some strange shapes from the present. But if I let Him just take all the colours, threads and pieces, I don’t have to sit and stare at them. The root of every untrusting feeling is the fear that He is not in fact good and that His love will end, especially when I feel I have no clue or answers about what to do. But if I forfeit my desire to know every outcome, if I forfeit the need to have physical evidence or feeling as evidence, then I will trust in His Word that He is with me, and that He is weaving stars and gold from what looks like odd patterns to me. And doesn’t that make all the difference?

C.S. Lewis — ‘I know now, Lord, why you utter no answer. You are yourself the answer. Before your face questions die away. What other answer would suffice?’

One choice we can always make, even in the midst of painful uncertainty, the simplest place to start is with this: “Love the Lord your God … and love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater…” You will always be where you need to be as long as Love is your aim.

I’ve been playing a lot of chess recently. It’s a nice quick break when I need one and the variety of the game always keeps me coming back for more. (I’ve read that there are so many possible games that no one will invest the effort to calculate the exact number).

There is something immensely enjoyable about shrinking your world down to a board with 64 checkered squares, 6 types of pieces, and just you and your opponents skill and experience.

Strategy, sacrifice, the pride of winning and the sting of defeat – the game has it all!

It’s so easy to play one game after another… after another (on chess.com you can instantly find someone to play with from around the world as soon as your current game ends). Pretty soon you are engrossed in wanting to get better – to get to the next level. The best portrait of this is Bobby Fischer who was arguably the greatest chess player of all time. I watched most of the recent movie about him, Pawn Sacrifice, but then my plane landed and I didn’t get a chance to finish it. I kept thinking about how determined he was and how there was nothing and no one who could stop him in becoming the world champion of chess. Eager to be proven right I found the following clip to the end of the movie:

I was right. He had won.

But at what cost? The footage at the very end is of the real Bobby Fischer.
Did you catch what he said?

“Chess is basically a search for truth.”

He had lived his entire life in pursuit of becoming the best that at the end of it all he ascribed the highest of value to a game. He worshipped chess. How many of us do the same? Maybe not with chess, but how many of us exchange the truth of God for the lie, and worship and serve creation rather than the Creator?

It’s so easy to become engrossed in seemingly harmless things to distract us from the present, from pain, from the struggle. But we can only meet with God in the present. We can only come face to face with the eternal in the here and now. What are the things that distract us from letting God perfect that which concerns us? What are the things that hinder us from carrying out the will of God for our lives?

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. (John 2:15-16)

Do you want to be the guy who hits the snooze button several times (lust of the flesh) or the one who is eager to faithfully seek God out through prayer and reading His word?

Do you want to be the guy known for always flipping through his smartphone checking the ‘latest and greatest’ (lust of the eyes) or the person always ready to lend a helping hand?

Do you want to be known as the best chess player of all time (pride of life) or the best version of yourself – the best follower of Jesus you can be.

Be as those who,

use this world as not misusing it. For the form of this world is passing away. (1 Corinthians 7:31)

Put another way: Use this temporal world to lead you to an eternal God – not the other way around.

It is in the small victories that we prove to God that we are His.

Not many of us think we are living for money, fame, pleasure, and other trivial things that we ought to count as rubbish, but where is the proof? Where do I spend my time, energy, and money??

There is your answer.

May God grant us a spirit of repentance to turn away from worldly cares and carnal lusts and give us the grace to answer Satan every time like our Lord Jesus Christ did,

“Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”(Matthew 4:10)

Lent is upon us!

This cookbook takes all of the work out of coming up with healthy and nutritious things you can cook so that you can focus on what matters most during this time.

Each of the four weeks worth of recipes starts out with a weekly shopping list. These ingredients will be all you need to make four different meals for dinner that week.

Most, but not all, recipes are for two. In addition to the four weeks worth of dinner recipes there are also recipes for pastes, sauces, and salads. You can mix and match these as the pastes and sauces actually go well with the salads. You can get creative and even use them as a spread for sandwiches you make for yourself for a light breakfast or lunch.

In addition to all of the recipes, there are also several pages of tips and tricks taken from cooksmarts.com in the back of the cookbook.

A little disclaimer: watch out for the various way of saying the names of some of the ingredients. Even though it’s still the English language there are differences between Britain and the United States when referring to the same item. For example, what I would call rocket my husband would call arugula.

I’d love to hear your feedback and if you have any recipes yourself please share them!

I catch a thread at the corner of my eye, panic at the state of my dress. I pull out the thread, hoping to contain, but I am opening stitch by stitch, until it is undone. I feel down other lines, trace my fingers along the grooves, touching the smallest of stitches, the finest of threads that hold together the fabric of this garment. It is the seams that create a neat finish, the seams that hide the glory of human flesh tidily beneath the fabric. Because we all, with every inch of flesh and bone in us, want to live the neat and tidy life. Needle to thread, we stitch a seam of maturity, of how-to and how-not-to live, following closely the patterns we observe in the world around us.

And there’s a seam in my heart, one I trace back to spending hours pouring my soul over, needle to thread, weaving through all the truths I believed I must live, and all the expectations that would keep my life neat, keep it tidy. Because who longs to live a messy life displaying only rugged edges and pulled out threads all over? Yet with every stitch, it feels like I closed the hollow in my ears, unable to hear, sealed the passion burrowing in me, unable to live. For to be fully alive, is to be wholly attentive to the Voice that calls you into being, and to allow the flame inside you to burn as fierce and as loud as the Voice.

There is a song bottled in the heart, a beautiful symphony that awakens the soul to live out audaciously. We stifle the lyrics through finance-focused careers, pleasing those around us and masking who we are that we may be accepted. Yet every Word calls for embracing the unknown, to live day by day, uncalculated, unplanned, radically obedient. And in that radical obedience, a radical defiance to all the suppose-to-do and the should-do’s, shaking off every expectation we claimed as our own.

In our desperation to stitch our frayed seams to picture perfection we neglect the tell tale signs of the thread as it pierces our fabric. So when there comes a day when the thread snaps and the material wears thin from carrying a weight it was never meant to bear, what will the mark the needle left tell? There is the thread I stitch with, the thread of performance, perfectionism, scarcity and of comparison. The thread of lies, insecurities and of living for the applause that never seems to arrive. The thread that tightens and holds the fabric is the very thread that tangles us into an insolvable knot.

There is an otherworldly thread. This thread like the ECG on a monitor is the thread that does not tie but flows, as a steady thrum of a heartbeat bursting from our chest, chasing the truth planted in our hearts and bursting the seams of what is ordinary or expected. This thread is the thread of no seams, no limits, no bounds, no man made edges. This thread does not try to tuck in the chaos inside our world of sadness neatly away. Chaos is with the fabric, every fabric you’ll find it embedded in the fibres; otherworldly fibres that connect our spirit to the Spirit of God. For it is His Kingdom that lies within. It is His Kingdom that fills.

Sometimes my heart aches; am I really free? Do I live free or do I live confined to social and cultural expectations? Perhaps even my very own expectations. Often the well beaten path seems like the only option, when your feet are unsteady and choices seem heavy. But maybe all it takes is to open up your eyes and look beyond these sheltered gardens to see there is a whole forest out there beckoning you to explore its acres.

I’m beginning to understand that God has given us our passions for a reason. They are chosen and they are precious. We are not meant to be smoldered. Smoldered, by the piles of to do lists and meaningless business, obligations and “should dos”. Because what if there really is no “should” in life? Could the words of Esther, “Perhaps this is the moment for which I have been created” (Esther 4:14) hold true in each and every moment?

I believe we are made for adventure; we are made for more.

May we live zealously with purpose, realizing that every choice is a stroke of paint in the picture He is painting of our lives.

May we stop living as prisoners of all the should-do’s.

May we choose to stop calculating our every step.

May we allow the melody to rise, that we may unashamedly burst at the seams.

Over the door of every profession, every occupation, every calling, the world has a standing advertisement: “Wanted–A Man.”

Wanted, a man who will not lose his individuality in a crowd, a man who has the courage of his convictions, who is not afraid to say “No,” though all the world say “Yes.”

Wanted, a man who is larger than his calling, who considers it a low estimate of his occupation to value it merely as a means of getting a living.
Wanted, a man who sees self-development, education and culture, discipline and drill, character and manhood, in his occupation.

Wanted, a man of courage who is not a coward in any part of his nature.

Wanted, a man who is symmetrical, and not one-sided in his development, who has not sent all the energies of his being into one narrow specialty and allowed all the other branches of his life to wither and die.

Wanted, a man who is broad, who does not take half views of things; a man who mixes common sense with his theories, who does not let a college education spoil him for practical, every-day life; a man who prefers substance to show, and one who regards his good name as a priceless treasure.

Wanted, a man “who, no stunted ascetic, is full of life and fire, but whose passions are trained to heed a strong will, the servant of a tender conscience; who has learned to love all beauty, whether of nature or of art, to hate all vileness, and to respect others as himself.”

The world wants a man who is educated all over; whose nerves are brought to their acutest sensibility; whose brain is cultured, keen, incisive, broad; whose hands are deft; whose eyes are alert, sensitive, microscopic; whose heart is tender, magnanimous, true.

The whole world is looking for such a man. Although there are millions out of employment, yet it is almost impossible to find just the right man in almost any department of life, and yet everywhere we see the advertisement: “Wanted–A Man.”

It is a sad sight to see thousands of students graduated every year from our grand institutions whose object is to make stalwart, independent, self-supporting men, turned out into the world saplings instead of stalwart oaks, “memory-glands” instead of brainy men, helpless instead of self-supporting, sickly instead of robust, weak instead of strong, leaning instead of erect. “So many promising youths, and never a finished man!”

The character sympathizes with and unconsciously takes on the nature of the body. A peevish, snarling, ailing man can not develop the vigor and strength of character which is possible to a healthy, robust, cheerful man. There is an inherent love in the human mind for wholeness, a demand that man shall come up to the highest standard; and there is an inherent protestor contempt for preventable deficiency. Nature, too, demands that man be ever at the top of his condition.

The first requisite of all education and discipline should be man-timber. Tough timber must come from well grown, sturdy trees. Such wood can be turned into a mast, can be fashioned into a piano or an exquisite carving. But it must become timber first. Time and patience develop the sapling into the tree. So through discipline, education, experience, the sapling child is developed into hardy mental, moral, physical man-timber.

If the youth should start out with the fixed determination that every statement he makes shall be the exact truth; that every promise he makes shall be redeemed to the letter; that every appointment shall be kept with the strictest faithfulness and with full regard for other men’s time; if he should hold his reputation as a priceless treasure, feel that the eyes of the world are upon him, that he must not deviate a hair’s breadth from the truth and right; if he should take such a stand at the outset, he would…come to have almost unlimited credit and the confidence of everybody who knows him.

What are palaces and equipages; what though a man could cover a continent with his title-deeds, or an ocean with his commerce; compared with conscious rectitude, with a face that never turns pale at the accuser’s voice, with a bosom that never throbs with fear of exposure, with a heart that might be turned inside out and disclose no stain of dishonor? To have done no man a wrong;…to walk and live, unseduced, within arm’s length of what is not your own, with nothing between your desire and its gratification but the invisible law of rectitude— this is to be a man.

This is a guest post by Sara Malak

In a world in which we are constantly bombarded with a need to be and to do, where we are frequently asked “what do you do? what do you want to be?” We seem to have lost a clear vision of what we are here for.

In the midst of the noise of trying to figure out who we want to be and what we must become, we hear a church bell ring, a symphony of praise, and a gathering of people like you and me. We have joined them many times but in the busyness of all the running around and our sweeping thoughts we did not notice what was happening, our senses could not be still, could not behold the great and awesome Presence before us.

Other times we were too busy all together – too busy trying to be busy – to take off our shoes, walk on holy ground, and enter into the divine place in which the Divine offers Himself. Consequently we have hindered the body we are part of from being whole and unshaken.

You see this great hostility that lies between the world and the church, as though the church were somehow pulling us away from moving forward and the world pushing us towards becoming something or someone, is a lie, it’s a lie that we have chosen to believe and commit our lives to living, but it is in striving to live that lie that we have silenced Truth. Since ‘Satan is a liar and the father of it’ (John 8:44) and ‘he who is of the devil has no part in Him’ (John 14:30) the more we pursue that lie the more we are left lifeless.

We are not here to ‘move forward’ to somehow be the masters of our destiny, or to ‘save’ the world. Indeed I cannot even help myself, let alone be of use to the world.
That is where the secret lies. The church is a gathering of people who have dared to step away from that lie and allowed themselves to be useless for a moment, a people who are not afraid to know and see that they are broken, wounded, and lifeless. They come as one body and partake of one Loaf. Here they know there is no special ‘use’ to them, you do not receive a bigger portion because you are particularly useful, no my dear you receive all that is offered, you receive the fullness of Life, you receive Him who is Life, simply because you have come. You have come with a heart open to receive and not an ego too puffed up to believe it is in need.

Pour out your entire ego O my soul that the uncontainable may find room in that small heart of yours. Come knowing that your uselessness is not despised – it is welcome! It is welcome and it is given to stand in heaven on earth, where the Angels come down and we ascend, where the heavenly and earthly unite, and we stand before the only One who was and is and is to come.

Ephesians 2:10 says we are God’s workmanship. Workmanship or masterpiece in Greek translates to poiēma or poem. We are God’s poem. What is a poem? Dare I say it – it is a useless thing! It is a beautiful, soulful, completely and utterly useless thing. In the language of today’s hustling and bustling world, things that are of no practical use are minimized and eliminated. But do you realize how much beauty we miss out on? You are God’s poem, He delights in you, he takes pleasure in you, he was thinking of you before you even came to be, He loves you and remains to adore you.

And to commune with His precious poem, to meet with you in a real and intimate way, He offers you His flesh and blood that you may have a share and inheritance with Him and his family, the saints who have pleased Him since the beginning. So that you can continue to live your life each day not believing the lie and striving to be something but living bravely and faithfully as the flesh and blood of Christ. So that the sound of that church bell ringing may be the sound we hear when you walk by reminding us we are on holy ground and so that your whole life may be a symphony of praise, that Christ may be seen in you, that pure precious temple in which he dwells.

The Church, why then does it matter? It matters because you matter; you are a beautiful useless gratuitous being who is called to make Christ incarnate in everything you do; you are the Church.

A prayer: Lord, as my heart needs infinite washing and cleansing that it may be whiter than snow so does my soul need consistent partaking of the heavenly feast of Love and banquet of joy to fill the deep hunger in me. I have come as poor and needy, I have come as one who is nothing that you may be everything. I believe that I am your beautiful poem though I see no beauty in me I know that you make all things new and can make beauty out of ashes. Deep deep down in me there you lie patiently knocking that I may open the door for to you ignite my whole heart, soul, and being with the Divine fire of your presence. Heal me that I may open, wash me that I may purify and see you, love me that I may love you.

Really? I can do that? I’m worthy to get up and start all over again?

It’s that time of year again where our news feeds are flooded with new year resolution suggestions and tactics. People are discussing why you weren’t successful in the previous year at achieving your goals and what may work in the next year.

In reality we know what works best: simplicity. It’s in the simple living and the simple changes we make to our lifestyle that makes everlasting change.

I want to share the following 55 Maxims of Fr. Thomas Hopko (Priest and Theologian, 1939 – 2015) where he demonstrates the art of living. He takes a holistic approach, encompassing all aspects of our life: spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical and relational.

I challenge you to pick 3 – 4 and do them well this year.

Be always with Christ.

Pray as you can, not as you want.

Have a keepable rule of prayer that you do by discipline.

Say the Lord’s Prayer several times a day.

Have a short prayer that you constantly repeat when your mind is not occupied with other things.

Make some prostrations when you pray.

Eat good foods in moderation.

Keep the Church’s fasting rules.

Spend some time in silence every day.

Do acts of mercy in secret.

Go to liturgical services regularly.

Read the scriptures regularly.

Read good books a little at a time.

Cultivate communion with the saints.

Maintain cleanliness and order in your home.

Have a healthy, wholesome hobby.

Exercise regularly.

Live a day, and a part of a day, at a time.

Be totally honest, first of all, with yourself.

Be faithful in little things.

Do your work, and then forget it.

Do the most difficult and painful things first.

Face reality.

Be grateful in all things.

Be cheerful.

Be simple, hidden, quiet and small.

Never bring attention to yourself.

Listen when people talk to you.

Be awake and be attentive.

Think and talk about things no more than necessary.

Speak simply, clearly, firmly and directly.

Flee imagination, analysis, figuring things out.

Flee carnal, sexual things at their first appearance.

Don’t complain, mumble, murmur or whine.

Don’t compare yourself with anyone.

Don’t seek or expect praise or pity from anyone.

We don’t judge anyone for anything.

Don’t try to convince anyone of anything.

Don’t defend or justify yourself.

Be defined and bound by God alone.

Accept criticism gratefully but test it critically.

Give advice to others only when asked or obligated to do so.

Do nothing for anyone that they can and should do for themselves.

Have a daily schedule of activities, avoiding whim and caprice.

Be merciful with yourself and with others.

Have no expectations except to be fiercely tempted to your last breath.

Focus exclusively on God and light, not on sin and darkness.

Endure the trial of yourself and your own faults and sins peacefully, serenely, because you know that God’s mercy is greater than your wretchedness.

When you fall, get up immediately and start over.

Get help when you need it, without fear and without shame.
